Seaweed, Sea, and Community: Rote Island

These photographs were taken on Rote Island, Indonesia—the world’s largest archipelagic nation, made up of more than 17,500 islands. Community-based seaweed farming is an important livelihood for local families. In Oelolot and Mbueain villages, farmers practice sustainable cultivation methods recognized through Best Management Practice (BMP) certification, highlighting how traditional knowledge and environmental stewardship come together in coastal communities.
